Ice Caps and Ice Belts: the Effects of Obliquity on Ice-albedo Feedback
نویسندگان
چکیده
Planetary obliquity determines the meridional distribution of annual mean insolation. For obliquity exceeding 55◦, the weakest insolation occurs at the equator. Stable partial snow and ice cover on such a planet would be in the form of a belt about the equator rather than polar caps. An analytical model of planetary climate is used to investigate the stability of ice caps and ice belts over the widest possible range of parameters. The model is a non-dimensional diffusive Energy Balance Model, representing insolation, heat transport and ice-albedo feedback on a spherical planet. A complete analytical solution for any obliquity is given, and validated against numerical solutions of a seasonal model in the “deep water” regime of weak seasonal ice line migration. Multiple equilibria and unstable transitions between climate states (ice-free, Snowball, or ice cap/belt) are found over wide swaths of parameter space, including a “Large Ice Belt Instability” and “Small Ice Belt Instability” at high obliquity. The Snowball catastrophe is avoided at weak radiative forcing in two different scenarios: weak albedo feedback and inefficient heat transport (favoring stable partial ice cover), or efficient transport at high obliquity (favoring ice-free conditions). From speculative assumptions about distributions of planetary parameters, 3/4 to 4/5 of all planets with stable partial ice cover should be in the form of Earth-like polar caps.

Climate Change of Mars: Effects of Obliquity
Introduction: Behaviors of the Martian climate system has been investigated in several studies [e.g., 1-4]. If the Martian climate was warm owing to the greenhouse effect of CO 2 in the past, a drastic climate change (climate jump or climate collapse) due to decrease in the amount of CO 2 in the system must have occurred during the evolution from a warm condition to the present cold condition [...
متن کاملThe Morphology of the Martian Ice Caps: A Mathematical Model of Ice-Dust Kinetics
Spiral-shaped canyons on the polar ice caps of Mars are striking morphological features whose explanation is still mysterious. We pose a model for the kinetics at the ice-atmosphere interface based on the positive feedback properties of both dust and ice albedo within the north polar ice cap, together with katabatic wind transport of exposed dust. Analysis of this model indicates that traveling...
متن کاملEvaluation of MODIS Albedo Product over Ice Caps in Iceland and Impact of Volcanic Eruptions on Their Albedo
Albedo is a key variable in the response of glaciers to climate. In Iceland, large albedo variations of the ice caps may be caused by the deposition of volcanic ash (tephra). Sparse in situ measurements are insufficient to characterize the spatial variation of albedo over the ice caps due to their large size. Here we evaluated the latest MCD43 MODIS albedo product (collection 6) to monitor albe...
متن کاملOn the nature of the sea ice albedo feedback in simple models
We examine the nature of the ice-albedo feedback in a long-standing approach used in the dynamic-thermodynamic modeling of sea ice. The central issue examined is how the evolution of the ice area is treated when modeling a partial ice cover using a two-category-thickness scheme; thin sea ice and open water in one category and "thick" sea ice in the second. The problem with the scheme is that th...
متن کاملNonlinear threshold behavior during the loss of Arctic sea ice.
In light of the rapid recent retreat of Arctic sea ice, a number of studies have discussed the possibility of a critical threshold (or "tipping point") beyond which the ice-albedo feedback causes the ice cover to melt away in an irreversible process. The focus has typically been centered on the annual minimum (September) ice cover, which is often seen as particularly susceptible to destabilizat...
